Chapter Thirteen

Once I left Grams’ house, I swung by the Drunken Pie Café to check on how things were going. After slow sales the last few times Ruby had been left in charge, I wasn’t expecting much. I’d resigned myself to the idea that it was probably going to be a poor day of sales. But I told myself that poor sales were better than no sales, so I should still be grateful to Ruby for keeping the café open for me.

But to my surprise, the café was hopping when I arrived. The lines were just as long as ever, and Ruby was somehow managing it all by herself with a huge smile on her face. I saw her before she saw me, so I knew she wasn’t just trying to look good because I was there. She seemed to genuinely enjoy working with the customers, and I felt a bit guilty for doubting her. Maybe she’d just had trouble the first few times she’d been working by herself and had now figured out how to handle the shop by herself. Or maybe it hadn’t had anything to do with her, and she’d just happened to have a few slow days by sheer bad luck.

Whatever the case, today she looked like she was doing a magnificent job, and I breathed a sigh of relief. In the midst of all the frustrations and dangers that were currently filling my life, Ruby was a bright spot. I’d searched long and hard for a good employee, and I couldn’t have been happier that I’d finally found one.

I didn’t stay at the café long. I checked in with Ruby, who assured me that she had things under control and insisted that I go home to continue to rest. I figured she was right, and that I deserved the day off. Besides, I was eager to get to Sophia’s house. I knew Sophia wouldn’t be home yet, but if I got there before her, I figured I could find a good hiding spot to watch her when she came in.

And that’s exactly what I did. Taking Sprinkles with me, I headed toward Sophia’s house. I parked several blocks away, not wanting to take the chance that she would see Grams’ car, realize I was there, and get suspicious. I walked with Sprinkles to Sophia’s house, trying to look nonchalant in case I ran into someone. As far as anyone else could tell, I was just out for a stroll with my dog.

Still, the closer I got to Sophia’s house, the more nervous I became. If any of her neighbors happened to see me, they might get suspicious. Word traveled fast in Sunshine Springs, and I had a feeling that people were already talking about the fact that I’d been run off the road last night. All it took was one of the paramedics mentioning something to another one of the paramedics while someone was eavesdropping. Soon, that eavesdropper would tell another person, and they would tell another person and so on until the whole town knew.
